Pinoy named Pandaca Comelec Comissioner

by Micah Lucero

President Benigno Aquino III appointed Grace Pandaca as the new Comelec Commissioner, last October 2.

Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda confirmed that he verified the papers concerning the appointment of Padaca through the office of the Executive Secretary. Comelec Cnommissioner Sixto Brillantes welcomed and praised Pandaca for her good governance as a governor of Isabela province.

Pandaca, however, still has to answer possible questions on her appointment on the confirmation hearing headed by the Commission on Appointments.

She will take over the position vacated last April by Augusto Lagman. The latter was not reappointed after the Commission on Appointments blocked it.

In line with this, the President sent a letter to the Commission on Appointments that he would highly appreciate the confirmation of Pandaca’s apointment.

Pandaca lost against Governor Faustino Dy III last 2010 elections. However, Brillantes pointed out that this can be a good spot for argumentation because the previously mentioned election was the latest, and the constitution says, “One must not have been candidates for any elective positions in immediately preceding elections.”

Pandaca was a broadcaster in Isabela province before entering politics. Since 2004, she led as Isabela Province as its governor. Also, she is a co-founder of Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governace and Ethical Leadership; with the former Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo, and then Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio.

Moreover, Pandaca already won four awards- Ramon Magsaysay Awards for Government Service, Us Department of State Woman of Courage Award, Benigno Aquino Jr. Fellowships for Professional Development Award and the First CEO Excel Award, for her “untarnished integrity and her impeccable record in public service.”
