Gifted through giftedness

By: Pauline V. Francisco

For parents, having a child endowed with “giftedness” can become extremely an extremely rewarding situation, but can also become a daunting challenge that they must face at times. Courage in making tough decisions must be instilled in the mind of the parents when it comes to raising a gifted child, for their choices will have an effect that can make or break the child’s overall development.

An early detection

Distinguishing if your child is gifted can be seen as early as toddler years. Parents may become confused when dealing with this stage, for at times a gifted child may become very inconsistent and unpredictable.

There are circumstances when a gifted child is lagged behind others, and there are also situations where he appears to be way ahead of them.

Basically, being introspective and observant are the characteristics of gifted children. They are curious about many things and ask questions frequently, making them intellectually advanced. They perform and learn things quicker and effortlessly show great results that you would not expect from them. Some gifted children do not show all these signs at first but you will notice that their ability is more than the usual compared to children their age.

Issues faced

Gifted children do not always have the advantage in every situation they may run to. Due to their advanced discernment and capabilities, they may experience some information overload. And because too much is not right in every aspect, this may cause an overwhelming effect on the child.

Gifted children may be accustomed in the thinking that everything can be learned and the propensity of that may result into thinking that everything must be learned. They have a tendency to be controlled by others, so parents much teach their child the skills of reasoning, logic and memorization and nurture its emotional development as well.

A step into further development

Although gifted children are endowed with above-average capabilities they still need guidance in everything that they do. Parents need an insight of their own motivation and an insight of the children’s motivation as well. Keeping an eye on their progress is a must in order to boost their potential in the right and pressure-free manner. It’s always best to have the child tested by an expert and note its findings and advice.
