The Department of Education (DepEd), in partnership with Smart Communications, joined the country in paying tribute to the crucial role that teachers play in nation building, as part of the World Teachers’ Day on October 5.

DepEd and Smart launched a nationwide online poster-making contest for elementary students and photography and video-making for high school students. The competitions aim to recognize the Filipino teachers’ hard works and sacrifices for the betterment of the country.

“Our teachers are actually our heroes, so it is just proper that we give them the recognition they have already earned and truly deserve,” DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro said in a press release.

Luistro said that the partnership penetrates the online community in hopes to “help build public awareness and support on the National Teachers’ Month and World Teachers’ Day every October” and to make the celebration at par with other more distinguished occasions.

“As online contests, the outputs of the students can be shared in a wider community, making Teachers’ Day celebrations as widely observed as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day,” added Luistro in the press release.

Each school was only allowed to pass one entry each category except of the video-making contest. All entries for the competition were submitted on or before September 12. Chosen finalists were posted online for public viewing and voting was available from September 15 to 30.

First, second and third placers will receive P10, 000, P8, 000 and P5, 000, respectively together with a certificate.

The featured teacher, school head and entry sender shall be given certificates and awards in Atrium Limketkai Center in Cagayan de Oro City on the World Teachers’ Day itself.
